Display in the school, showing the "last visit" of Dmitri I. Mendeleev in 1899 with his relatives (he is in the center) -- eight years before his death. This visit was combined with a business trip to the Urals, where he made a report on the mineral resources there.
The display reads:
"Mendeleev Dmitri Ivanovich
27 Jan [old style] 1834 (8 Feb [new style])
20 Jan [old style] 1907 (2 Feb [new style])
Born in Tobolsk
He passed his childhood in the village of V. Aremzyany
Great scientist - chemist, thinker.
Author of the periodic system of the chemical elements.
Last visit to Tobolsk at V. Aremzyany
30 June - 6 July 1899"
The "old style" is the Julian calendar, the "new style" is the Gregorian calendar. While most countries in Europe and the British colonies (including the future U.S.) converted to the Gregorian calendar sometime during the period 1582-1752, Russia did not convert to the Gregorian calendar until 1918.
